I've decided to rename secret weapon no. 2 the "dissertationometer", and changed the metric to words written, rather than pages. I'm counting even the earliest stages of drafts to the word total -- I'll have to figure out a way of dealing with double-counting when I get into the revision process. Jesse tells me that A.J. Ayer had a policy of writing 1500 words, then calling it a day, every day. Anyhow, since fear of shame is my greatest motivator, I think this little gadget may do the trick.

Is your word count gross or net? It's much easier for me to achieve 1500 words a day, gross, rather than net. The problem is that those 1500 words may all just be re-writes of stuff I've written earlier. And it's not uncommon for me, by the end of the day, to have erased more than I've written.
